On May 23rd, the 26th International Military Band Concert will occur in the Chandos Pattison Theatre in Surrey.
Each year since 1990, military musicians from service bands across BC and the US Pacific Northwest have come together for a weekend of intense rehearsals, culminating in a gala concert. For the first 20 years, the concert was held in Olympia Washington but as of 2011, the location began to change depending on which band agreed to host. I’m particularly excited about this show as it will be the first time the concert has been held in Metro Vancouver. The Chandos Pattison Theatre is wonderful venue and the musicians are excited to be coming to our city to perform.
This year’s composite band feature 75 musicians playing a varied repertoire in a salute to Queen Victoria and the British Heritage Canada and the United States share. And, we’ll even feature some pipes and drums during the show, which is always an audience favourite.
The BC Military Music Society, the group presenting the concert, has partnered with the Access to Music Foundation. Together, they have agreed that net proceeds will be donated to elementary school band programs in Metro Vancouver. This is a most fitting gesture as virtually every musician on stage will have begun his or her playing career in a school band somewhere in Canada or the United States.
